Protecting exterior wood

Protecting exterior wood

Installations of exterior wood can’t be considered complete until the timber has further protection by oil from sun, rain, and other elements, ensuring longevity and maintenance of its appearance.

Why protect wood?

  1. Weather: Wood absorbs water easily, leading to rot if untreated.
  2. UV degradation: Sunlight can discolour and weaken wood, but oils with UV protection prevent this.
  3. Fungal growth: Moist wood attracts fungi like lichens and algae, which oils can prevent.
  4. Wear & tear: Oils shield wood from scratches and maintain its strength over time.

Using wood oils enhances wood's natural oils, improving both its look and durability. These oils penetrate the wood, unlike coatings, and are easy to apply and maintain.

Exterior wood oils are crucial for protecting surfaces like decking, fences, and outdoor furniture from moisture, sunlight, and temperature changes.

In the Dane Care range there are 3 categories of exterior oils:

Woca Exterior Wood Oil – an excellent, absorbing product that offers both natural and a range of colours. Long-term trials have shown this oil, being an absorbed finish, is not prone to flaking and so is extremely easy to maintain. Simply wash down and reapply.

Linea Apilegno – for new timbers when a clear and light finish is required. The oil will to a great extent keep the timber appearing as-sanded, but deliver all the protection required.

Woca Exterior Wood Shield – for timber that is already aged and taken a silvered appearance. This should be washed down and then have Wood Shield applied. The silvered appearance will be retained, but the timber given all the protection you expect to come from an exterior oil.
